New REO Appointed

It gives me great pleasure to announce the appointment of Greg Watson as our new Referee Education Officer for Harbour Rugby. Greg brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the role and will be a familiar face to Harbour Rugby through his involvement as a North Harbour Rugby referee. Greg will start with us on Monday 2^nd April and I look forward to having Greg part of our team at Harbour Rugby.

Resignation

It is with regret that I inform you that Dean Watkins has tendered his resignation which I have accepted. Dean has accepted a position with New Zealand Rugby League in Coach Development and his last day will be on Friday 13^th April. Dean has been with Harbour Rugby since 2008 and although he will be missed both professionally and personally, he can leave knowing he has made a significant contribution to Harbour Rugby during his time here, particularly in Community Rugby.

Pre-Season Up and Running!

We have all been working really hard over the last 5 months as our pre-season really kicks into high gear preparing for 2012 opening round on March 31^st.

This is especially so for the players at pre-season training on Mon/Wed/Friday nights and they are putting in some hard yards at the moment. We are really pleased with cross section of players we are getting to training (and the numbers – well done boys) with players ranging from local school boys to returning senior players.

It is especially good to see many U19 players there. So time to strap on the footy boots and get to training guys – 6:30 Monday/Wednesday and Friday at the club.

There are three things we are concentrating on getting in pace at present:

Coaching
Players and
Systems

In terms of coaching everything is in place and we are happy to say all our coaches except for U21’s have returned to the job. John and his U21 team have decided on the much deserved rest after their championships win last year. The U21 coaching job has been taken by Geoff Alley, past player, NZ sevens rep and current coach of the North Harbour Sevens.

Our rugby manager has put a lot of effort into recruitment, as have all the coaches, as we have lost a number of players, some going overseas and some leaving for other areas in New Zealand, while some of the older players have retired. This seems the norm these days as the players are much more fluid and they have more opportunities to advance their careers overseas than they used too. However, we are in good shape and should be fielding some excellent teams this season.

As to systems Charlie has all our coaching systems in place and we are ensuring that management also have a good structured approach to on-field activities. Sue has done her usual hard work in securing gear funding, gear and sponsorship and we are looking good as things get into gear.

Our pre-season is also in place and we have a game schedule ready to go. Our home games are against Pakuranga on Sat the 25^th of Feb and Drury on the 17^th of March.

Silverdale Junior Seahawks 2012 upcoming season

2012 is already building to be one of the most exiting seasons yet at Silverdale.

With registration dates confirmed at the 6^th 7^th and 8^th of March at the club, planning is well underway.

We are expecting a bumper crop of future Allblacks to play for Silverdale this year, based on the success of the Allblacks during the world cup, and the success of our junior club last year.

This year again we will be running our development squad trainings for J4 to J1. That will kick off mid-season with guest coaches being involved. Also for the first time we will be running leadership training for young leaders in J3 to J1. This will cover all aspects of both on and off the field leadership, and involve specialist trainers in their respective fields.

There will also be a real focus on specialist skill training with coaching coming from our Prem Players when available. With the success the senior club enjoyed last year, I expect that home games will again prove popular and exiting for the junior fans.

The J3s will be defending their title as North Harbour champions at that level.

Don’t forget about our awesome Rippa league for boys and girls aged 5 and 6 (even aged 4 if they’re turning five by July 1^st)

As always we will be hosting teams for Friday night footy, under lights, where the famous Dale Burgers will be flying out the door as well.

So strap yourselves in for a huge 2012 season, where at Silverdale we focus on fun first.

From the Finance side of the Club

January and February are a couple of months at the Club which are hard on the cash flow, with minimal receipts received but with continuing outgoings. In simplified terms the Club spends approx $500,000 on operating costs annually, with receipts from sponsorship, bar, catering, subscriptions and grants providing the main revenue sources.

The Clubs cash flow this year is further strained by a number of “one off” costs relating to the building upgrade – these include Architect, Traffic Engineer, Quantity Surveying, and Project Management fees.

Field 3 lights have been causing problems for a period of time, and the cost of repairs which are currently underway is anticipated to be $12,000

The Board has worked closely with the Directors of senior and junior rugby and other Directors with module responsibilities to provide the funding, playing gear and resources necessary for fielding teams in rugby, netball, sevens and touch – all in all close to 2000 playing members during a year.

All funds generated at the Club are reinvested into sports teams, building or equipment for the enjoyment of members.

New Appointment

Hi my name is Logan Sears and I am a newly appointed independent director for SURFC.

I am a Silverdale old boy having played for the club through the late 80s and early 90s, (a long time ago now)!

I have a long history of self employment and as a CEO of national companies, and have recently moved back into the area. I am hoping to bring some good all round strategic thinking to the board and as I have been given the role of sponsorship I am looking forward to building and growing the relationships with our supporters to ensure the continued growth of the club.

I am humbled to have been asked to contribute and hope that I can do justice to the role, I look forward to seeing you at some stage at the club.

Building Upgrade

In July 2011 a Special General Meeting of members endorsed the Boards decision to plan for an upgrade of the Club building.

The Board considers an upgrade necessary primarily for two reasons;

To upgrade an ageing building to a modern standard for the enjoyment of members, tenants and other users, and
Provide increased revenue earning potential to contribute towards the increased operating costs of sport at the Club.

Upgraded building plans have been completed and Resource Consents relevant to upgrading field lighting, change of bar licence and building upgrades are near completion for submitting to Council.

The Board has appointed a specialist person to assist in fundraising for the project. Funding for the upgrade project is likely to be a drawn out process, with many of the potential funding organisations over subscribed relevant to the funds that are available, so if you have a spare million dollars or two let the Board know.

A new lease tenant the Northgate Church will be occupying the “Gym” area of the Club building commencing 1^st March 2012.

Many outside factors have contributed to the Board deliberations on the building upgrade. These include the Council development of Metro Park and the new Park and Ride facility where access by forming a road thru the number two field forms part of an objection by an adjoining land owner.

If you require further information regarding progress or more detail concerning what is planned for the Club building the Board is very happy to provide information.

After a strong 2011 Club season and great numbers to our pre season trainings, Silverdale had a great showing at the club sevens on Saturday.

Premier side came 3rd overall, missing a number of key players the team really stepped up and played with great structure, focus and commitment! Narrowly going down in pool play by 2 points to North Shore (eventual winners).

With 2 under 20's teams who competed well especially our 2nd team with a number of players still at school convincingly beating a very good Massey side first up and narrowly losing the Plate final to Kumeu.

Off the back of this showing, a number of Dale players have been selected in the initial training squad for Harbour sevens to compete at the nationals:

Glenn Preston one of Silverdale's Rising stars

19 Year Old Silverdale Premier Blindside Flanker has had a great year in 2011, making the Premier side and playing every Prems game bar 1 through injury. Glenn's form caught the eyes of North Harbour Selectors and he was named in The North Harbour Under 20's Side, with consistently strong performances, Glenn became a key contributor on and off the field. North Harbour community Rugby Manager Mark Mayerholfer quickly recognised Glenn's talents, attitude and work effort and as a result Glenn has been contracted by Harbour for the next 2 seasons.

Not only has Glenn caught the eyes of provincial selectors, he was also identified by national selectors as a potential NZ Under 20's candidate! Glenn travels to Palmerston North to a NZ Under 20's camp in late November in an opportunity to further push his case for NZ 20's selection.

"Glenn's attitude, commitment and desire to improve are key to his swift movement up the ladder. From the moment he entered the Silverdale Pre Season environment October 2010, he put the hard yards in and thrived. Glenn is a huge asset to Silverdale and a great role model to our younger players! NZ Junior Rugby Festival Taupo 7-9 October 2011

The New Zealand junior rugby festivaltournament is held for junior rugby clubs with grades from under 9’s through tounder 13.’s. This year there were approximately 72 teams competing in the twoday tournament, which was held at Owen Delaney Park in Taupo.

This year Silverdale United was representedin this tournament by J3 Green, which was entered in the Under 11 grade. We were advised by the organisers that wewere the first team from the North Harbour Rugby union to take part in thetournament,

which to us was pretty special.

The teams participating were from all overNew Zealand from as far north as Kerikeri, through to as far south asDunedin. There are normally more teamsfrom the South Island, however due to there being a tournament held two weeksbefore this tournament in Queenstown, there weren’t as many this year.

In the Under 11 grade there were threepools each consisting of four teams in each. We were drawn to play in Pool C against:

· Kahukura RFC from Bay of PlentyUnion (Rotorua)

· Pakuranga RFC from AucklandUnion

· Southern RFC from TaranakiUnion (New Plymouth)

We were lucky enough to win all three ofour games on the first day;the standard of rugby was extremely high, with allour games being very tight encounters. One game we had to come from behind to snatch a victory in the dyingstages of the game, luck was on our side.

On Sunday which was finals day, we were drawnto play against College Rifles RFC from Auckland in the Cup Semi-final. This team was totally dominant on the firstday comfortably beating all teams in there pool.

This game was like an All Black test match,it was so intense with the lead changing all the time. We were down heading tothe business end of the game, something sparked the boys up and we were totallydominant for the last 10 minutes, eventually winning 17-14. The College Riflesplayers were extremely disappointed and found it difficult holding theiremotions after it had sunk in.

This game put us through to the Cup Finalagainst Kia Toa RFC from Manawatu, (Palmerston North). The game was scheduled for the number 1 fieldat 3pm. When we arrived to play Ithought that we had the wrong team as the whole team were as big as men.

One kid in particular would have been atleast 6ft tall and was at least 60kgs (the limit for this grade is 46kgs) Hewas the fullback and was so fast and so strong he reminded me of a young JonahLomu when he first came onto the scene.

Well I hope that everyone is enjoying the “World Cup”! I am sure most of you have either been to a game or two, or at least made it to the Cloud to join in the festivities of this wonderful event.

Unfortunately our club has been a little quiet with having the limitations of the World Cup on us. We hope that this will soon be back to normal and we look forward to seeing all your familiar faces yet again.

I would like to inform you that we have been able to obtain a special licence for the evening of the 23^rd October 2011 being the “World Cup Final”. This means that we will be open for the evening with the bar and kitchen open so we can all sit back and enjoy, (hopefully a New Zealand win) in our own club! You are also able to bring friends and family on the night and sign them in.

North Harbour Rugby Union asked of us to put a team together to play a pre season match against North Harbour Under 18 A side.

We as a club saw a unique opportunity to follow on the wonderful club sprit and success that we had encountered over the 2011 season.

We came up with the concept to involve not only club players from all our grades but to include local secondary school players as well. It was met with a positive from all teams and we had a variety of players involved from Whangaparaoa College, our club playing U19s right through to a handful of Premier players.

Whilst we didn’t win we certainly put up a strong physical challenge and showed unified club spirit on the day. We look forward to next year. Go the “Mighty Dale Baa Baas”

As I’m sure you all know the Rugby World Cup 2011 is only a 10 days away while the first training run at Silverdale Memorial Park is only a few days away.

We’d like to take this opportunity to let you know that that the SURFC will be in RWC Exclusive Use Period from Friday 02^nd September through to Sunday the 2^nd October. This means that there will be no public access into the Park and no access to the club during their training runs.

Short Line Out Charity Fishing Tournament

The Short Line Out Charity Fishing Tournament is on again and we are asking all the rugby clubs to rally their members and enter this great tournament.

It raises money for The Rugby Foundation, and offers $20K in prizes including overseas travel for the average weight snapper!

Last year, the North Shore Rugby Club took out the trophy for the club that caught the most weight of fish, and I tell ya what, it was prettty hard handing a trophy over to a townie club! But on the serious side, those boys deserved to win it.

So no matter if youre a townie club from the city, or a country club from way up north, get the boys together and come on out to Omaha for a weekend that will be talked about long after the footy season has been forgotten.

Silverdale Wins two Championships in 2011

2 Championship wins, 1 Championship Runner up, 1 Semi Finalist (3rd) & Plate final tops off a great year for Silverdale, thanks to all the supporters, players, managers, coaches to making this a year to remember!!

Silverdale Senior Firsts won the Club Final for the first time in our club's history defeating Northcote 15-10! Dale scored 2 tries dominating for most of the game but showed great resolve last 20 mins on defence to ensure they took home the Silverwear!

Silverdale 21's who had last won the 21's championship back in 2004 beat North Shore 18-17 in a nail Biter! The 21's had a great side with a mixture of school leavers and more experienced players and did the club proud beating north Shore at their home ground to win the Championship!

With our Premiers narrowly losing the final at shore 17-16 in what was a closely fought final that kept a huge crowd of 6,000 supporters truely on the edge of their seat!

Our under 85kg Restricted team had a great season making the semi finals against another country club in Kumeu which they narrowly lost 10-3.

The club's under 19's have battled through a tough season but shown great spirit and performed well to make the Plate final losing to North Shore but building a platform for improvement in 2012.

Aimed at brushing up your Rugby World Cup 2011 knowledge and perfecting your hosting skills, you can pick and choose the modules that interest you most – or do the lot. Up to you. The Club will be showing games right throughout September and October on our
BIG SCREEN with surround sound! So for the very best in real rugby club atmosphere
your local club is the place to be.

The Club will be transformed, with a sea of flags, a grandstand and dugouts so that
you and your friends can experience the nearest thing to being at the game. Each
game listed on website will be shown live on our BIG SCREEN and will have a nations
theme, so dress up and soak up the atmosphere.

To non club members a cover charge of $10.00 per person will apply, which entitles
the person to a social membership at the Club and one complimentary drink.
(Beer/wine or non alcoholic) Children under 16 years of age are free but must be
supervised by an adult.

Late last year the North Harbour Rugby Union introduced a new "Affiliation fee" player levy across 12 Clubs, that make up the Union, in an effort to further support rugby and its continued development in and around the North Harbour region.

It was suggested Juniors would need to pay a $23.50 player levy. As you can appreciate, concerns were made by clubs about this amount and eventually it was agreed that the levy would be $5 per player.

As a result of such a decision/negotiation, the NH Rugby Union has undertaken a joint fundraising initiative with the 12 clubs, that provide a special ticket offer for two ITM Cup games, that will be played at North Harbour Stadium during July and August.

Silverdale United Rugby Football Club invites you to a day celebrating Golden Oldies Rugby!
Teams will be 10 or 15 aside dependent on numbers and be a round robin consisting of 4 games each.

Entry is $50 per team with a complimentary plate of hot food and a beer after the tournament. Come along as a team or an individual and join in the festivities with the live games playing in the clubrooms after the tournament.

The tournament will be held at Silverdale War Memorial Park and the heart of Hibiscus Coast Rugby.

The hunt is on again to find a few remaining sponsors for our annual Charity Fishing Tournament. Without the support of the sponsors, we are unable to raise money for our chosen charity, The Rugby Foundation, and also the Mahurangi Rugby Club.

We have a few positions left to be filled before we can start sending out the promotional posters and drafts for our adverts.

Our most popular packages are for our category sponsors that range from $150 up to $1000 for the Heaviest overall Snapper. As a category sponsor, you will recieve a ticket to the event and have your companies name promoted through out the tournament, as well as sponsoring a major prize package. For example, for $250, you can sponsor the heaviest overall Gurnard for the tournament.

We also have available our average weight prize, which this year consists of overseas travel valued at over $2000. If you are interested in this, let us know and we can sort out a suitable package that suits your company.

This year we are also looking at having a naming rights sponsor, and renaming the tournament "(Your company name) Short Line Out Charity Fishing Tournament". Sea Hawks riding on a high!

Orewa New World Premiers have placed 2nd on the table at the end of round 2 behind North Shore and have achieved a week off while the rest fight it out in the quarter finals to determine who they play in a home semi final on the 23rd of July. This is a huge achievement for the Team and Club and we look forward to some huge support on the 23rd July! the last and only time the club has won a Premier Championship was 2003!

The Orewa New World Senior Firsts have been unstoppable this season winning the first round Shield and qualifying top of the table to achieve a home semi final on the 23rd of July! the senior firsts have never won a club championship and the desire to achieve this huge within their squad.

The under 21's are also placed well leading into the business end of the season currently in 3rd place on the ladder. With 2 games left in the 2nd Round (Eden Black and Navy) they have a real opportunity to cement their place in the semi finals. Silverdale last won the Under 21 Championship in 2004.

The under 85kg restricted team are placed 3rd on the ladder only 3 points behind leaders North Shore. Silverdale Last won the Championship in this grade back in 2002.

Under 19's in a year of rebuilding are working hard and improving their results from the first round and looking to finish the season with further improvement and Development. Their are some talented players in this team and a great team culture!

With a few weeks of club footy ahead, we ask for your support of all our teams leading into playoffs!

Living Legends tree planting with Buck Shelford - 11 September

The Living Legends Event/Project will plant 85,000 native trees/shrubs during the Rugby World Cup at 17 planting sites across New Zealand in honour of many of NZ’s legend rugby players. In North Harbour, our Living legend is none other than Wayne “Buck” Shelford and our planting site is Long Bay Regional Park. Long Bay Regional Park is a hugely popular regional park which many of you would have visited in the past and an area of wetlands in the north-east sector of the park will have 5000 plantings completed on the day – Sunday 11 September.

The Living Legends project will run for 4 years until 2015 at the various sites and more details of the project can be found on www.livinglegends.co.nz . The Living Legends project is being run by the same organisation as “Project Crimson” which has been re-establishing Pohutukawa trees for many years around the coast after the devastation by possums. The project is supported by the Department of Conservation, Auckland City Council, the Tindall Foundation and Meridian Energy.

We would like 100 plus members of the North Harbour Rugby Community get in behind the project and participate in the plantings at Long Bay Regional Park on the day. There will be other community groups involved also taking the number involved on the day to 500 which means each person plants 10 native plants. The plants will be laid out in position and planting instructions will be provided. It would be great to see all our clubs and schools represented on the day in their rugby jersey’s mucking in on the day in support of our Living Legend Buck Shelford who will be in attendance. We are hoping to get attendance of other Harbour rugby legends, our ITM cup squad and other big names. There will be a free sausage sizzle on the day after the plantings.

Our Living Legends Project co-ordinator is East Coast Bays rugby stalwart Bruce Mitchinson. Bruce has been involved in Bays rugby for many years as a coach, team manager and administrator and is currently their senior rugby committee chairman. So if you are able to assist in this project could you please let Bruce know who your club/school co-ordinator is and the numbers attending, if we could get 10 persons from each club and school we will have a big crew to get the job done. Colleges may have Environmental Groups who may also like to get involved. Clubs might like to nominate a single team to represent them.

Country Cup - Orewa New World Silverdale Premiers vs Western Pioneers this saturday at Dale!

Rally the troops - this saturday is a huge day at Silverdale with the Country Cup up for grabs at 2.45!

Both teams are tied in second place on the ladder with one round after this saturday to go till quarter finals. This game is crucial for both sides chances of getting a home semi final!

Needless to say Silverdale have a burning desire to retrieve the Country Cup back in the club after losing to Western first round.

Silverdale on the back of 2 bonus point wins are building momentum and want you to be a part of this great match!

Senior Firsts who are top of the table kick off at 1pm. Should they beat Western Senior Firsts they will secure a home semi final!

On Wednesday the 13th of July (7PM) we will be holding a Special General Meeting at the club to present to the membership the results of a building review the board has been doing since 2007.

This meeting is to ask the membership for a positive indication of how the club should move forward into the future and will present the membership with an option for the re-building of our current club facilities, the reasons, the risks and the opportunities.

In advance of the meeting, copies of building plans and a report detailing the Boards proposal will be available on our web site and from the club.

In addition we will be sending a copy of the report to you by email once it is finalised.

This is an important milestone in the club and requires as much input and debate we can get, so we need as many members present as we can so that we get a wide range of input.

Please attend this meeting and encourage other club members to attend too.

Orewa New World Silverdale Premiers VS Western Pioneers

With the country Cup up for grabs it was noted in the build up to this game that it brings special meaning to all teams that get an opportunity to challenge for it. Building into this game, injury had plagued the squad with: Centre Cory Aporo (our for the season), Prop Ropate Rinakama (Hamstring), Daryn Wigg (Back injury) and halfback and captain Andrew Gowling away with work. It was a test for the depth of the squad for sure! Never the less the players that made the starting line-up were hungry for opportunity and make their own making a starting jersey their own!

From the kickoff both teams showed their desire to attack space, with some quality breaks being made by both sides. Western with a fired up loose trio consistently hit the break down with intent and put real pressure on Silverdale ball.

Western took first points of the game stretching the Silverdale defence out wide and scoring an unconverted try to lead 5-0. It didn’t take long for Dale to kick back into gear with some outstanding counter attack from Fullback Jordan Puletua and hooker Travis Brighouse showed a good turn of pace in support to run in the try!

New recruit prop Dan Roach showed how destructive he could be with ball in hand smashing through the western defence before going down with a leg strain!

Dale seemed to be controlling possession while and it wasn’t long before Lock Glen Preston spotted space on the outside and threw a nice miss pass to captain to Mikaele Tuu’u who outsprinted the Western cover defence score and take the score to 10-8.

Western hit back again stretching dale out wide and took the lead after converting, 15-10. With Western looking to settle their style of play and look for territory leading into half time a poorly weighted kick was received by fullback Jordan Puletua, who put on the afterburners and terrorising the Western Defence, finally offloading 5 metres from the line to winger Brad Abraham who scored! Western knocked over a penalty just before half time going in to the break leading 18-15.

Starting the second half Silverdale looked to pin Western deep in there own half and build pressure from there. This tactic looked to be paying off with Western players struggling to cope with the pace and width Silverdale were using. With numbers on the outside a miss pass was thrown and intercepted by Western’s first five Regan Oxenham who scampered away for the try.

With 19 Mins to go on the clock the momentum clearly swung and Western found a new lease of life dominating at scrum time and finding holes in an out of sorts Dale defensive line. Adding further fuel to western’s fire, Dale captain Mikale Tuu’u was sent to the sin bin for rucking and western made the most of his time in there scampering away for 2 further tries. Final Score 38-15 to Western Pioneers.

Western were handed over the Country Cup and Dale will be fired up for their next opportunity to get the cup back in their cabinet!

This result put Dale’s feet firmly on the ground and with two tough games ahead in North Shore and Northcote the squad will be working extremely hard to achieve our potential in 2011!

Next game vs North Shore this coming Saturday at Silverdale 2.45pm.

Silverdale Premiers make it 2 from 2 in a tight fought battle vs Takapuna at Onewa Domain this week!

Silverdale flew out of the gates utilizing width and with left winger Denis Pili-Gatau throwing in one of his customary fends against the cover defence saw him score in the corner. Great start to the game 5-0 up and a stunned Takapuna looked speechless under the posts!

Backing up for the next 10 mins dominating territory and possession a foray of pick and goes close to the takapuna line finally saw the referee award a penalty directly in front of the sticks! First Five Clayton Kiwara further extended the lead to 8-0.

Takapuna answered back with sustained pressure and showed how deadly first five Jon Elrick could be in NZ 20’s and Harbour captain Smith. Clayton tightened the deficit into half time banging over a penalty and 13-11 Takapuna had the lead.

With a large focus being put onto gain some front foot ball for the backline and ensuring that we trust and deliver quality execution of the systems, Dale entered the field revitalized and ready to deliver!

The first 20 mins of the second half saw a number of penalties going against Silverdale and luckily Elrick’s long range radar was slightly off only hitting 1 of 4 attempts in the second half to extend the lead to 16-11.

With 15 mins to go Dales superior fitness allowed them to pin Takapuna inside their own 22 and force them to kick, much to Dale Fullback Jordan Puletua’s who showed outstanding evasion skills and dominating contact when Takapuna managed to get close to him! Captain Andrew Gowling lifted the tempo from halfback and the Dale train was becoming harder to stop! Openside flanker Mikaele Tuuú broke through some weak ruck defence and scamper 20 metres to score a fantastic try! Conversion was missed tying the score line up 16-16 all!

Andrew Gowling continued to cause havoc around the fringes for Takapuna making an outstanding break and kicking the ball ahead, which landed just about on the corner flag! 2.02 metre lock William Lloyd then showed how invaluable he is to the team plucking the ball from the opposition on their own line!

With the crowd on the edge of their feet Jordan Puletua continued his dominance on the match scampering home for a try and Clayton Kiwara delivered with a conversion straight down the middle of the sticks! Final score 23-16 and a very excited sideline of supporters celebrated a tough fought win to Silverdale Premiers!

Player of the day was vice captain and number seven Mikale Tuuú who had an outstanding game, topped off with a fantastic try that put the momentum well in Dales favor!

Special thanks to Luke McAlister who took time out of his busy schedule to present the jerseys and pass on some motivational words to the team pre match and also running the water for the team for the day!

It was a very special day for Silverdale Rugby with all 3 teams that faced Takapuna defeating the home team for the first time in Silverdale’s History (21's won 6-3 and Senior Firsts 18-12!)

Head Coach Charlie McAlister although pleased to take the win had the following to say post match:

"Yep….. work in progress at the moment, more accuracy is required by the team."

"We knew it would be a tough game and we didn't execute our game plan as well as what we had wanted to. We kept at them though and stole the win in the last 10 mins so credit to the boys!

Silverdale J2 plays Bloemfontein

Silverdale's J2 Red hosted a school boy team from Bloemfontein last weekend.

Although the Silverdale boys we out muscled and lost the friendly game, an awesome experience was enjoyed by all. Overnight billeting meant the two different cultures were discussed, friendships formed and club trinkets exchanged.

We were sad to say goodbye to our guest and wish them well on the remainder of their NZ tour.

The Silverdale Premier rugby team had a first up match against a reputable Massey line up last Saturday at Silverdale.

It was a fast paced, bruising game with no quarter given by either side.

The Seahawks began the game with a two-penalty lead after several over exuberant tackles by the Massey defense. New recruit at first five Clayton Kiwara impressed with his kicking accuracy and skilful passing.

It was during this first ten minutes of furious action that a Massey player was sin-binned. The referee rightly gave a stern warning to both sides and the game settled into a more constructive phase.

Silverdale gained assertiveness at this stage and dominated possession although a broken play midfield break by Massey almost resulted in a try. Fortunately this was well halted by the industrious Silverdale wing Brad Abrahams.

When the Massey No 8 returned from the sin bin this boosted the tempo of the Massey forward pack and they put immense pressure on the Silverdale defense. They were rewarded with a try by their elusive fullback, K Pisi.

The Seahawks were not daunted by this and immediately retaliated with a creative try from the front of a lineout.

With the score at 11-7 after the 30^th minute play seesawed back and forth with both sides stretching their opponents with the ball in hand. Massey converted a penalty from a Silverdale infringement but Silverdale responded with a converted try after a huge scrum push on the Massey line.

The halftime score was 18 -10.

In the second half the pre-season fitness of the Silverdale team showed its dividend. Midfield back Willis Halahalo consistently cracked the Massey defense with his storming runs. He was well supported by loose forwards Daryn Wiggs and Mikaele Tuu’u who were in aggressive attendance to snap up the ball and chop down the Massey advances.

In the last quarter Massey stepped up a notch and pressured the Silverdale defense. After several relentless forays on the Silverdale tryline Massey were justly rewarded with a try by their back row forward, J Atho.

This spurred the Seahawk machine back into attack mode and they were rewarded with two more tries. The best scored by their fleet footed fullback, Jordan Puletua.

One player who greatly impressed in this first match up for Silverdale was lock forward Glen Preston for his tireless work in the tight and on defense.

Generally, a tidy performance by the Seahawks and much promise of better things to come.

Start of the Season Update from the Rugby Operations Team

With the Club rugby season kicking off this weekend in North Harbour, Silverdale Premiers are excited to host Massey at 2.45 this Saturday 2^nd April. The club has been a hive of activity starting back in September last year with an intensive pre season being put in place by Premier Head Coach Charlie McAlister who drove Silverdale to it’s first Premiership win back in 2003 and has been coaching Mount Albert Grammar 1^st 15 with huge success over the past few seasons!

With McAlister back at the helm alongside the Rugby Operations team they have looked to drive a change in Philosophy and culture to build a blueprint to the ongoing success on field at Silverdale:

“We who are in charge of the rugby operations aspect of the club, i.e. on field performance have a very clear goal on three fronts:

1. To build a club environment where our juniors and their parents can feel their children are in a safe, productive and rugby learning structure. To both foster their own development, as young children should do.

2. Build a player work ethic where performance is more important than status, which intern we will strive to develop a harder edge to our player participation where a player will be judged and selected on there actions at trainings and attitude around our club not where competition is too tough.

3. For all these things to be positive, we need success on the field to help glue our visions and hard work.”

Charlie is joined this year by Ex centurion Ray “JR” Wells who returns back to the club as Forwards Coach and brings a wealth of experience and Knowledge after coaching Premiers at Glenfield previously and involved as a coach at Mount Albert Grammar. Backs Coach Paul Mant comes back to the club he played as a junior after coaching at Marist for the past few years along with being involved coaching age group rugby for North Harbour.

The Mangement team is headed by Dean Fielding who brings a lot of experience being involved in Navy Rugby, North Shore and Harbour Under 20’s team and has well assisted by Dave Wrathall and Trevor Mills to ensure the side is running like a well oiled ship!

The Premier side this year is an exciting mix of players lead by Club Centurion Andrew Gowling who returns after a season playing in Sydney and Vice Captain Mikaele Tuu’u who played for Northland in last seasons ITM Cup.

“It's been an exciting start to the season with plenty of new faces and new ideas brought into the team environment. Everyone is gelling really well and I'm definitely excited about the prospects for the upcoming season which starts with a bang playing Massey at home, doesn't get much bigger than that!” says Captain Andrew Gowling

With some new acquisitions to the playing ranks including Ex Bay of Plenty Steamers Mid Fielder Cory Aporo who is now contracted by Harbour, Poverty Bay First Five Clayton Kiwara, NZ Sevens representative Fullback Jordan Puletua and NZ 20’s Mid Fielder Tyrone Ngaulafe plus the return of a number of experienced Silverdale Premiers such as Daryn Wigg, Simon McKennie, Brad Abraham, Ropate Rinakama, Chris Winks and Dennis Pili-Gatau.

With Silverdale Premiers undefeated in the pre season including defeating Waikato Club Champions Hamilton Old Boys and Top 4 Auckland Club side Pakuranga (Coached by ex Harbour coach Wayne Pivac), has Silverdale well prepared for a tough club season in 2011.

The Premier side has also worked hard to build a strong link with the junior club running coaching workshops with some of the Junior Club and also having a number of Local school players invited down to attend the pre season trainings.

This Friday at 6pm the premiers host a dinner with Guest speaker All Black and Harbour legend Buck Shelford plus Charlie McAlister speaking about the exciting 2011 season for Silverdale Rugby, tickets available through the club website.

This Saturday action kicks off at 1pm with the Under 21 and Senior First sides taking on Massey and 2.45pm will see the Premiers Kick off. The club is expecting a huge turn out from the community with junior games in the lead up and a lot of excitement around with an exciting bunch of players in all grades!

The NZRU has made the Rugby World Cup – the William Webb Ellis Trophy, available to clubs in the North Harbour Region over the weekend of 2 and 3^rd April on Saturday afternoon

The Cup was at the club for an hour, in the club rooms on a low stage to permit viewing and photo opportunities for persons standing alongside it.

This was a wonderful opportunity for club rugby members and supporters to see the magnificent William Webb Ellis Trophy.

Saturday's pre season game for the Silverdale Senior Firsts against Hamilton Old Boys was the first opportunity to have a hit out before competition starts on the 2nd of April. The wet weather proved a test for both teams with many handling errors but this possibly played into Silverdale's hands .Up against a solid HOB forward pack Silverdale quickly asserted their dominance at scrum time and at the break down setting up their first try through a slick backline move. Silverdale trialed players in unfamiliar positions to see how they preformed and coaching staff were not disappointed with the results.

Silverdale Coach Selwyn Peden was pleased with the teams efforts and commented that he could see some areas that needed work but not unexpected for this stage of the season. The team is coming together well says Peden and we are looking forward to strengthening the team with some players returning soon from injury. . It is already looking like a strong side with a good team spirit and desire to win. Silverdale went on to win the game 24 -7.

Next week the Orewa New World Silverdale Seahawks RFC take on Wayne Pivacs Pakuranga RFC which will be another good opportunity to see the teams in action at home. Matches start at 11am and with the Premier team playing at 1:30pm.

Referee Recruitment 2011

North Harbour Rugby Union are looking for 20 new referees for the 2011 season. The four focus target areas of opportunity are:

Ex players and those current players due to injury cannot play rugby in the early part of 2011.
Current club players who would like to make a start as a referee by refereeing junior rugby at their local club in the morning before playing their club game in the afternoon.
Woman who would like to seek a new challenge with the aim of having a North Harbour woman refereeing at the 2014 Woman’s world rugby cup.
Secondary school students (male and female) who would like to take up refereeing as their chosen sport and gain 11 NCEA credits.

North Harbour referees are the leading referee body in NZ and they have had a very successful year. Glenn Newman (ex player) has been appointed to ITM cup fixtures and TMO for internationals and Super 14. Luke Prangley, Hayden Smith, Julien Szostak, Ryan Nixon and Will Burrett are currently in the Northern zone Referee squad which covers an area from Taupo Nth.

Information on the Introduction of Club Affiliation Fees by North Harbour Rugby Union

Why

A long standing source of funding for Community Sport and in particular Rugby is under increasing pressure. For many years North Harbour Rugby has sourced funding from various Gaming Trusts to help cover salaries and overheads for Union staff who provide rugby administration and development services to Community Rugby.

Gaming Revenue is down nationally, meaning that there is less money available for distribution.

Affiliation Fees are charged by many other provincial rugby Unions in New Zealand, and almost all other sporting codes.

Provision of Community Rugby Services

North Harbour Rugby provides key administrative and rugby development services to community rugby (clubs and schools). The administrative service includes, competition management (draws and results), playing field bookings and co-ordination, fixture cancellations and transfers, judiciary administration, registration co-ordination, management of amateur representative rugby programs, management committee secretarial/co-ordination duties, referee liaison, player transfers and clearances, serious injury reporting, and tour approvals. Rugby Development services are coach education, injury prevention courses, referee education, referee administrative support, player skills and knowledge development, tournament management, and rugby development programmes.

How and When

Each Club will be invoiced for an Affiliation Fee as at 1st July 2011 based on the numbers of registered junior and senior players for Community Rugby services. Players will be advised of their Affiliation Fee when registering for the season along with the relevant club subscriptions.

The Affiliation Fee

The Affiliation Fee levels in 2011 will be $10 for each senior club player and $5 for each junior club player. Clubs will be required to collect the players contribution to the Affiliation Fee as an additional part of the player’s subscription. The player Affiliation Fee has been kept to a minimum to ensure the game remains affordable in our region at all levels.

ITM Cup Ticket Sales Program Fund Raiser for Clubs and Union

The Affiliation Fee alone is insufficient to fund the shortfall in required funds to cover all Community Rugby Services. In addition to the Affiliation Fee, a dedicated ITM Cup Ticket Sales program will be implemented. The detail of this program will be worked through over the next month between the Union and Clubs.

The Silverdale Rugby Club Junior Committee is seeking volunteers to assist with the operational running of our Junior room at the club

Manning the Junior room, Wednesday and Thursday from 5 to 6;30pm – The initial month will be spent with a committee member in training.

2. Handing out information to off the street members
3. Taking apparel orders
Manning the Junior room Saturday mornings
1. Opening up the changer rooms
2. Ensuring the fields have been set up and contacting our grounds officer if not correct

General tidying of the room

This is a voluntary position, with the full support and training of the Junior Committee, and with the support of the Grounds and Junior room officer.

Rugby World Cup Goodwill

During the Rugby world Cup, being held in September – October 2011 the Silverdale Rugby Club is hosting, as a training venue, teams from Japan, Samoa and Namibia.

Club Chair, Jon Marshall says that the Rugby World Cup is an exciting opportunity for the Club and the local community. In conjunction with local Councils, the Club’s planning is well under way to ensure an enjoyable experience for visiting teams, supporters and the local and surrounding communities.

Jon, says that the Japanese team coached by John Kirwin has already visited the Silverdale Club twice, as preparation for the Pacific Nations Cup and the Rugby World Cup. A good relationship has developed between the Club and the Japanese team and officials. Silverdale rugby hopes to encourage some of the expected 4000 visitors from Japan over the time of the World Cup to visit and share in a “rugby experience” at the Club.

Club members knew little about the Namibian team, but were fortunate to learn that The Right Hon Dame Jenny Shipley and her husband Burton were involved in supporting a school in Ehomba, Namibia through their Namibian Educational Trust.

Jenny was selected in 1997 as the first women Prime Minister in NZ.

The Club contacted the Shipley’s, and were fortunate after a few emails and conversations to learn that they were leaving for Namibia in late July 2010. Burton enthusiastically offered to assist and advise the Club when hosting Namibia during the Rugby World Cup. Burton also offered to deliver Seahawk rugby balls and Club shirts, as a token of goodwill, to the Namibian Rugby CEO Sakkie Mouton, when visiting Windhoek the country’s capital. Jon says that few supporters are expected from Namibia, but it is hoped that the relationship with the Shipleys, Namibian rugby and the Silverdale Club can be fostered.

Namibia has recently performed well in the IRB Nations Cup, held in Bucharest, beating Romania and Georgia. Namibia is currently ranked 20^th in the IRB World Rugby rankings.

I have been recently appointed to the Board of Directors at Silverdale United RFC as an Independent Director responsible for Communication.

My goals for the next few months are to:

Provide the club with an up to date database of current Club members. This is so that current, regular and useful information can be quickly provided to all members. Over the past few weeks many of you will have been receiving the Mighty Dale Mail and more recently a Club Managers report from Sue Turner. We expect to have all members, including Touch and Netball, on the system over the next month.
Improve communication with our members. This is a two way process. We will provide you with information via e-mails and on the club website http://www.silverdalerugby.co.nz/ . We welcome comments from you the members. These may be in the form of compliments, constructive criticism and ideas for improvement. Please address all correspondence to silverdalerugby@xtra.co.nz and make it for my attention (FAO: Peter O’Brien).
Make the club website our primary means of communications. In other words anything you need to know about the club and/or what is going on will be posted on the website. So please check the site regularly (at least once a week). We will of course continue to forward you e-mails to inform you of what has been posted on the website (i.e. Mighty Dale Mail ‘MDM’).

The 1st XV Matters - Defence No 2 of Woodhouse Shield. Heroic OC turn over Westlake

All Black legend Chris Laidlaw has courted some controversy in his recently published book entitled ‘Somebody Stole My Game.’ Had Mr Laidlaw been present around Orewa College Number 1 pitch on Saturday, he would have found his game in very safe hands. It was first versus second in the 1A North Harbour Championships. Westlake came to Orewa with an unbeaten record. Orewa took the field as the current holders of the Woodhouse Shield. The game lived up to its billing as the match up of the round. A sizeable crowd was treated to an outstanding contest between two sides which deserved their respective places at the top of the table. The occasion proved to be even more momentous for the home team and their supporters. For the time being, the Woodhouse Shield is staying where it is.

The OC 1st XV squad was undoubtedly boosted by the return of coach Dan Takarangi, fresh from the IRANZ High Performance Coaching Course. For Dan the game had even more of a personal connection, given that his son was the starting half back for the visitors. The squad met earlier than usual to ensure that everyone remained relaxed and focussed before the 1200 kick off. Preparations throughout the week leading up to the game had been intense with coach Phil Cheney and TIC Rugby Joe Duffett putting the team through their paces on the training paddock. Everyone involved with the 1st XV realised the importance of this particular game as the 1A competition approaches its half way point. Orewa College has not beaten Westlake since the early 1990s. Beating Westlake and retaining the shield would therefore be no easy matter.

It was great to see so many turn out to support Orewa. A large number of former members of staff such as last year’s coach, Glen Savage, as well as former OC 1st XV players were very much in evidence around the Number 1 pitch, along with the family and friends of the current crop of players. A great many members of the OC rugby section were also out to support their 1st XV and the 7th Grade put on an exceptional performance in their curtain raiser which set the tone for the senior players. Conditions for the match were far from perfect, but the rain held off. A strong, swirling wind would prove problematic for both sides, but the elements were with Orewa for the first half. Both sides started nervously, but an intriguing contest quickly developed. Visits to either 22 were rare in this first period of the game, but a Matthew Paladin punt led to the first points of the day. The Westlake full back’s fumble led to a scrum. The Orewa pack had already started to assert their dominance at scrum time and pressure here forced the Westlake back row to break early. Andrew Fluker’s penalty put the home side 3–0 up. Yet it would not take the opposition long to strike back. Westlake engineered some decent field position and their perseverance was rewarded with a 16th minute penalty which levelled the scores. Orewa re established their lead straight from the restart. Zane Turner caught the Westlake No 15 isolated from his support and forced the penalty which Fluker sent between the uprights.

By this stage, Orewa had settled into their work and were playing some intelligent rugby. Using the elements to their advantage, they kept the opposition pinned back in their half. Aggressive defence meant Westlake found it difficult to get into their stride. The game’s first try almost came in the 20th minute. A Fluker penalty attempt dropped short of the posts but forced a scrambled clearance. The ball somehow ended up in the arms of wing Warwick Cheney who was denied a try in the corner by some desperate last ditch defence. It says a great deal about the maturity and awareness of the team that the chance to score at this stage was fully registered. The forwards were patient in their build up from the scrum. Control of the ball through 5 or more phases led to an attacking scrum on the Westlake 5m line. Once again, the team realised that they would not necessarily strike from first phase and their control of and recycling of the ball inched it ever closer to the line. The home supporters raised enough din to rival the vuvuzelas of the soccer world cup when lock Torin Rensford burrowed over for the game’s first try. Fluker’s conversion pushed the home side out to 13 – 3.

The remaining 5 minutes of the first half set the pattern for the whole of the second half. The 31st minute captured the spirit of the team and of the occasion precisely. Kyle Loader chased back to cover a smart Westlake kick and chase and literally launched himself at the ball to deny Westlake the chance to kick through and possibly threaten the Orewa try line. A punt and chase in the 33rd minute saw Hunter Nelson, Nathan Cargo and Sean Airey turn from defensive duty at one end of the pitch to attacking duty at the other. The pressure they exerted on the Westlake back three almost led to the game’s second try. It was a fitting end to a pulsating half of rugby and Orewa went into the break thoroughly deserving their lead. The contest intensified in the second half. There would be nothing else to trouble the scorers, but the game went from end to end. As expected, the Orewa players would not have it all their own way. Westlake were always threatening whenever they had the ball, but they failed to keep it long enough to build continuity and confidence. This was due in no small part to a heroic defensive effort on the part of the home team. At no stage did panic creep into the ranks. The coaching team went to the bench when required and Kim Hines and Vincent Cann entered the fray in the 14th and 20th minutes of the half respectively. As the clock ticked down and the visitors’ search for points became more desperate, the home side showed that it has developed the requisite game savvy to close the game out. The players competed at every tackle and at every set piece or breakdown, often emerging victorious from these individual contests. Westlake had one last chance with 2 minutes left to possibly score and earn themselves at the very least a losing bonus point. Yet the defensive line stood firm and the attack was snuffed out by exceptional cover work from Zane Turner and Nathan Cargo. The game finished with the home team very much in control of both the ball and the territory, pretty much as they had been throughout the 70 minutes.

This remarkable win does not alter the standings on the 1A table, but both Orewa and Westlake are still out front having only lost the one game each. The Woodhouse Shield remains at Orewa. Anyone remotely connected with Orewa College and its rugby section will undoubtedly enjoy this win over our rivals Westlake. However, as coach Dan Takarangi is keen to remind our boys, we are only as good as our last performance. Next week, it’s back to basics once again. The first half of this season is down. There is still a great deal more rugby to be played.

Report on Ball Presentation and Japan Open Training

Silverdale Rugby Club played host to the Japanese national team on Monday afternoon as preparations for next year’s Rugby World Cup gather pace. The Japan team will be based on the Hibiscus Coast during next year’s tournament and will spend a great deal of time training and preparing at the Silverdale club grounds. Monday’s event was very much a dry run for the World Cup and a sizeable crowd turned up on a chilly and overcast afternoon to enjoy the festivities.

The Japanese team were treated to a traditional welcome led by representatives of Te Herenga Waka. 1^st XV squad members from Orewa and Whangaparaoa Colleges performed an impressive rendition of the Ka Mate Hake and the Powhiri included a number of welcoming speeches and songs. The Japanese team were led onto the Silverdale pitch by All Blacks legend, John Kirwan. Kirwan is now coach of the Japan side following a successful spell at the helm of the Italian national rugby team. Following some welcoming words from Rodney District’s Penny Webster, the team broke for an open training run whilst esteemed guests and club members retired to the warmer environs of the clubhouse to enjoy the club’s hospitality.

Once the team had been put through its paces, players were encouraged to sign autographs for those who had braved the cold. The team was getting itself ready ahead of their match against a North Harbour side scheduled to take place at the Harbour Stadium in Albany on Friday evening. The remaining formalities included a ball presentation, a display by the Taiko drummers and a welcome from Jon Marshall, Silverdale’s President.

There can be no doubt that this event will stimulate yet more interest in the Rugby World Cup which is scheduled to start in just over a year’s time. Of course there will be massive interest in the fortunes of the host nation, but the tournament will leave its mark on the local area with the arrival of Japan and other teams who will play pool fixtures at the Harbour Stadium. The Dale will also play a significant part in next year’s proceedings by throwing open its doors and making its facilities available to teams like Japan. Monday’s ceremony and training run at the club was the first of many such events that will bring next year’s cup competition into the heart of the community and allow local people to be a part of the tournament.
